NWCFL Opening Weekend Preview

The FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round brought non-league football back with a bang last weekend for most sides in the North West Counties Football League.

However, this weekend the official start to the league season arrives and we can’t wait.

Here, we preview some of the ties scheduled for this weekend to whet your appetite for the return of NWCFL football.

Premier Division

Burscough vs. 1874 Northwich

Fresh off the back of their FA Cup replay victory over local rivals Northwich Victoria, 1874 will face off against NWCFL newboys Burscough.

The latter face their first game in the Premier Division after relegation from the Evo Stik North league last season, and face a tough test against a team who’ll undoubtedly by on cloud nine.

Burscough last won this league in 1982-83, and will be aiming to do the same this season to make a swift return to the league above.

West Didsbury & Chorlton vs. Widnes

Last year’s First Division winners face their first test in the Premier Division against West Didsbury & Chorlton at The Recreation Ground.

West finished 6th in the Prem last season, clinching their record points total and highest amount of goals scored.

Joey Dunn’s Widnes lost their FA Cup tie against Handsworth Parramore 5-0 so will be eager to bounce back in Saturday’s game.

First Division

Litherland REMYCA vs. Stockport Town

The team who missed out on promotion in last season’s First Division Playoff Final face the team who many believe are the dark horses to go and win the division this season.

It’s been all change in the backroom staff at REMYCA, with Paul McNally taking charge of first team affairs and building a new team behind him, but in terms of playing staff there is a core of players still together from last season.

Colin Quirk, Michael Boyle, Sam Wilkie and recently Lee McConchie have all moved onto pastures new, but a 2-0 victory over AFC Liverpool in the FA Cup showed they’ll still be up at the upper echelons of the league table this term.

Dave Wild has revitalised Stockport Town since joining in January last season, and many expect them to push for promotion this term in his firs full campaign in charge.
