The French gaffer’s job is under threat – but does he deserve it?
With tensions mounting and the Mirror today reporting he’s lost the dressing room, it looks as though Puel could be out of a job very soon.
The former Nice man only joined Saints at the beginning of this season and guided Soton to 8th place with one game to go, as well as the final of the EFL Cup.
Compared with last season, when Ronald Koeman led this side to 6th on 61 points, it can be claimed that they have underachieved this season.
The maximum amount of points Puel’s man can get this term is 49 should they win this weekend – 11 points off last season and two places down the table.
Don’t forget, last season Chelsea, Liverpool and Everton finished below Southampton, which played a part in them finishing 6th.
That side also had Sadio Mane, Victor Wanyama, Graziano Pelle and Jose Fonte who all departed this season.
But in fairness to Puel, he’s made some astute signings himself.
Nathan Redmond, Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg and Manolo Gabbiadini have become key parts of the side.
If the rumours are true and the manager has lost the dressing room, their may be no way back for him.
Players hold all the power, and their complaints of his “poor training sessions” could be the nail in the coffin for the Frenchman.
Be Careful What You Wish For
Puel’s done an outstanding job if you compare him with the last French manager to grace the Premier League.
