Report: St Helens Town 2-0 Stockport Town

Two goals from Stephen Rigby saw St Helens beat Stockport Town by two goals to nil in a feisty affair at Volair Park, Prescot.

Both Rigby’s finishes came early in the second half and out of nowhere.

After a mistake by Daniel Whiting, the Stockport keeper who missed a punch, the ball fell to Rigby outside the area after Alec Mudimu failed to clear from a poor defensive header, and the St Helens winger fired home with his left foot into an open goal.

His first caught everybody by surprise, receiving the ball from a free kick on the left wing, he aimed a looping effort over the keeper and it nestled in the back of the net.

With the game boiling over, Stockport were reduced to 10-men after Aaron Dwyer lost his temper twice and was shown two yellow cards for his anger.

At the full time whistle, both teams clashed as they left the field, with the Stockport players and coaches seeming to be upset at the official’s performance.
